real course comparison picture
I started a little experiment a while back. I was just wondering how close I could get a sim course to look like the real thing. This is my old home club of Bolton Old Links designed by Alister Mackenzie.
I took about 100 digital pics of the hole from various angles to get enough information for a detailed recreation. Looking at the comparison again, I'm sure I could use some better trees and textures to match the ones on the real course.
I don't have any plans to complete the full course but it got me thinking. The apcd would be well suited to doing some visualisation work for real world golf course architects. Normal CAD programs simply can't deliver this level of detail and speed and I think it would be ideal for visualising alterations to existing holes or even routing a full course that is only in the planning stage. A little bit of time and effort at this point might prove to be very cost effective in the long run as changes can be seen in photorealistic detail from any angle in full 3d before any earth is moved.
