DriftWood G.C. 2003
Course description
In January 2001 I started work on my very first course for links using the APCD C.A.D. design program. Hours beyond count went by while I attempted to learn how to use the program and make the course at the same time! It was a great learning experience and when the course was finally complete and released, it went on to win the Links Corner course of the month award for February that year. The course was an attempt by myself to use everything I had learned (as a 12 year qualified Golf Professional) to bring to the game, a course that was not only realistic but also fun to play. The feedback I got was wonderful and inspired me to continue my efforts to bring ever more realistic courses to the links community.
A few course reviewers held DriftWood in such high regard that even after years had passed and apcd techniques had improved and moved on, it still ranked in the top dozen or courses ever released for the game.
With the release of Links 2003 and the new graphics enhancements available to the designers, I felt that the time was right to revisit my roots and I started to begin the long task of updating the course and use all of the techniques I had learned over the previous two years. The goal? To make DriftWood 2003 the absolute best it could be.
It was a larger task than I first anticipated as I thought that I would just start with seam blending the course. After about 10 minutes I realised that a lot more had to be done for me to be happy with it so I started to rebuild the course virtually from scratch, cleaning the mesh and elevating more realistically. Every bunker was redone to use more realistic elevations and the planting was also completely redone. In many ways it would have been easier to start a new course! The file size has amazingly dropped from over 64 meg to around 50 meg as I cleaned and tidied the course. Still not happy, I added the high res textures and then went to work on many of the hole designs to further improve the course while still retaining the character of the original course ( The original panorama has been retained). Hole previews have been added with detailed information on yardages and tips from me on how to play the course.
Two months down the line I have a course I am once again proud of. You can check out some of the pictures below to see how the course has been transformed.
I hope you have as much fun in playing the course as I had in (RE-) making it :)
