Bunker (sculpted)

I hope you managed the last example ok. Here is a more complicated shape using a similar technique.

First off lets go into the top view and draw our planned bunker shape in. You can use any terrain selection, I used water here so it showed up easily. I've drawn in my bunker shape below.

fig1

Next we need to mesh the verts in so we can elevate and add textures. I use the terrain painter method again and use the shape I have drawn in as a guide. I'm going to add some verts inside the bunker and also some out side to form a ring around the trap. In the pic below you will see what I finish up with. This took me about 5 minutes. Sometimes using the terrain painter method to add verts, it will add more than one and screw the mesh up. When you see this happen, just undo your last move and try again in a slightly different place. I added the bunker texture before I made the ring of verts around the outside of the trap.

fig2

Once thats done I move back to the perspective view and select the bunkers verts and also the surounding area verts. You can see below which ones I've chosen. I then tilt the area upwards a little at the greenwards side of the trap.

fig3

I then select the verts inside the trap by using interior select and press "f" to flatten them. I then make sure I'm in z azis (ie up and down) by pressing F8 and then lower all the verts a little so that it looks like this.

fig4

So far so good we have a generic type fairway bunker with no lip as yet. What we want to do now is sculpt the bunker a little so that it is more pleasing to the eye. What I do it individually select verts along the edge of the bunker and either raise or lower them. Bear in mind we are looking for a nice smooth shape here. I've detailed below which verts I've raised or lowered but remember they might not have all been raised or lowerd by the same amount. Your artistic eye and experience will tell you if its looking smooth or not. I spotted a rogue vert in that pic that looks too high and breaks the shape of the bunker floor so I'll lower it a little.

fig5

The trap is now looking nice but we better add a lip to it. This is where apcd 1.5 really shines as its possible to add a wonderful grassy bunker lip or a blended dirt lip. In 1.1 we are stuck with a sharp dirt lip but it still looks better than nothing so I'll explain how do put one in.

I'm going to use the double extrusion method on this bunker. here's what I do. First select the sand and then make a small extrusion downwards. I change the sharpness of the lip edges to "0" see pic below.

fig6

I then select the lip area faces using region select and apply the rough texture to it. Then I select all the sand faces again and do another small extrusion downwards. By using the same method as above change the sharpness of the bottom edge of the trap by perimeter selecting the bottom of the lip by clicking on any one of the edges inside the bunker. Change its sharpness to 3 or 4.

To complete the bunker we need to apply a dirt texture to the extrusion you just made. Select the red faces using region select and then apply a dirt texture to it from your texture selection window.

fig7

We need to map the dirt texture onto the lip for it to look good so here's what I recommend you do:

Go to texture coordinate mapping icon under the face tab. Region select your dirt lip ONLY.

Create a new planar mapping call it something like bunker1 Click rotate from your mapping options and change the x value to 90.000 thats 90.000 not 90000! Click uniform scale and change one of the values from 16 to something like 5 Click the "add to" button

You should end up with a lip that looks something like this:

fig8

As a finishing touch you can grab some individual verts and make the lip higher at the highest point of the trap so simulate the sand sliding down the steeper face a little. Hopefully when you've finshed you will have something that looks a little like the pic below. I planted a person using the plant crowd function to give the bunker depth more perspective. I hope you have fun working along with me in this tutorial :)

If you want to see how that bunker looks using apcd 1.5's texture blending features you might want to check out the pic below. click the thumbnail for a larger image. How did I do that? Well thats another tutorial :)
