Bunker (pot)

Ok, lets look at elevation in a few more specific cases ie bunkers. I've been asked several times to explain how to elevate a bunker so I'm going to go through a few examples here. The first one will be a pot bunker, the second a more complicated shape. Really there are an infinate amount of bunker types you can make with the apcd. Depending on the lip and shape you require it can be a simple or complicated process.

These tutorials will work for both apcd 1.1 and apcd 1.5 although there are many more advanced blending techniques available in 1.5 which I will get onto at a later date.

First up - a pot bunker.

fig1

Here you see the location where we are going to be working. I just put a simple fairway in so have somewhere to put our bunkers. We are going to be putting the pot bunker into the fairway itself so we need to go to the top view and add a few verts using the terrain painter method as described in earlier tutorials. We need a fairly circular bunker so about 16 verts makes a nice round shape. I've also included another ring of verts around the outside of the trap to make the surrounding elevation possible. Below you see the top view of the area and I've also selected the faces making up the bunker using "drag select" I've then chosen my sand texture and applied it to the faces. If you don't know how to use drag select and texture application tools you need to go back and read my earlier tutorials which describe in more detail how to use the simple functions of apcd.

fig2

Ok what we are going to need here is a few more rings of verts inside the bunker itself. We could add the using the terrain painted method but I use a quick and easy method as follows. I select the sand faces in the bunker and then choosing the extrude tool icon I then left click once on the selected area. I DO NOT extrude all I do is click once. You will see a red smudge appear.

Choose the scale tool and while holding the left mouse button down over the bunker slowly more the mouse to the left. We are going to use this new area we have just created (its red because is has no texture applied to it yet) and apply the bunker face texture to it.

fig3

You can either use a custom bunker face texture or what we will use here is your normal light rough texture. Select your rough texture and then apply it to the new faces

Then we want another ring of verts so you follow the same process as above, ie select the sand area and single click extrude then scale to make another row of faces. Apply the sand texture to these faces.

You should now have something that looks like this in the perspective view. If not go back and try again hehe!

fig4

Ok now the mesh is in place we can elevate. Box select all the verts that make up the bunkers and also the surrounding ring of verts. Select the tilt tool and you you will see the tilt box appear around all your selected verts. Move you mouse pointer into the corner of the box as show here and you will then see your mouse pointer turn into the tilt icon.

fig5

Hold down your left button and then move you mouse forwards. The box will start to tilt upwards. You can look down at the bottom right of the screen and see how much you are moving the average height of the verts in the tilt box. I work in yards and feet and so I'll move the box up by about 2 feet but its really up to you depending on how severe you would like the bunker to be. I then move my mouse pointer over this point (pic below) and tilt downwards a little. this will help the bunker collect more balls as it creates a small depression at the start of the bunker NASTY :)

fig6

Next do a region select on all the bunker verts and press "f" to flatten them. Make sure your perspective window is in the z azis by pressing F8 and then move the verts down a little so it looks like the pic below.

fig7

Do an interior region select on the sand verts and move them down a small amount to create a nice curved bottom to the bunker. We can now fine tune the slopes of the bunker walls etc see pic below

fig8

We need to sharpen the walls of the trap now so you need to go to the edge tab as detailed below

fig9

Most of the elevation is complete but we need to map the rough face of the bunker now. Select texture coordinate mapping by pressing "t" from the face tab or by using the icon shown in the pic below. Region select all the faces of the bunker.

fig10

Next follow these steps carefully!

Create a new mapping and choose cylindrical. Click "add to" Click "move to center" Click on uniform scale and change the value of any one of them to 10.000 change the Uwrap value to 10 Click "add to"

The finished product should look something like this:

fig11

I hope you made it this far and your bunker looks something like this! We can cover more advanced techniques at a later day when we get onto the seam mapping properties of apcd 1.5 :)
