About Mike Jones

Welcome to my personal page that will give you some information about me and my family. I started playing golf in 1978 when I was 11 years old. I missed Jack Nicklaus winning the Open that year on TV because I was out with my golf clubs on the practice ground of my local course. I wasn't a member yet but I didn't let that stop me!

Growing up nothing but golf was on my mind and every day after school I walked to my local course to play a few holes before dark. When I was 15 I joined Bolton Old Links golf club designed by Alister Makenzie who went on to design such great courses as Cypress Point and Augusta National. Here my love of great golf course architecture was born. After I left school I started to play and practice full time, winning various Amateur scratch competitions and going on to play team golf for my town and County.

In 1989 I turned professional. I played the European Satelite tour in the early nineties and soon after became a fully qualified P.G.A professional, winning a Titleist scholarship for exellence in training. One of my biggest victories as a playing professional came in the Sunderland Scottish masters in 1995 where I shot a score of 17 under par for 72 holes round Gledoch golf course.

In 1997 I became a club professional. I played in the British club professionals for the first time in 1998 and after qualifying at St Annes Old Links I went on to win the tournament held at Royal St Davids links course in Wales. Many doors opened for me after that and I went on to represent Europe in the PGA cup against the USA in Colorado USA. I then played in the 3 man England team as we finshed second in the European team championship in Spain. In 1999 and 2000 I had the opportunity to test my skills in several tournaments on the full European tour. It was great fun and an experience that will last long in my memories.

After the PGA cup I concentrated on coaching and it was a proud day when one the young players I had taught from his junior days won the Bolton Championship at age 17.

In December 2000 my wife Joanne, bought me Links 2001. After playing the game for a few weeks I became interested in the APCD course architect CAD program included. After many failed efforts I started a test course that went on to become Drift-Wood G.C my very first release. It went on to win course of the month at Links Corner and the feedback I got was wonderful and persuaded me to continue. I'm still going and I now have many courses to my name which you can find information about elsewhere on this site. Most recently I've been doing some work for various golf course design companies helping to visualize new courses and also helping to show off their remodeling of existing courses.

My wife Joanne and I, have been together for over 8 years now and we were married in Las Vegas!! We have a wonderful son, Daniel who is aged 7. Dan has really taken to golf and he plays both for real and on the computer ( easy swing! ) In fact he is chief tester for my courses, he finds places others only see in their worst nightmares!

Home for us was Bolton, England although the short season and general bad weather has persuaded us to look abroad and we now live on the sunny east coast of Spain.
